Technical Artists Terms - 3rd. Edition!

By Anna Meenaghan

Sanguine is the main colour in Conte crayons. It too is the name of a drawing, if this is used as a medium. This medium can either be chalk or crayon, with the pigment containing oxide and actually made of chalk or clay. It is often called red chalk. Sanguine can be a reddish brown, flesh colour or a blood red in colour.

Sandy Paste is an acrylic paste which has a gritty texture and is the colour of sand. You can spread it and make an interesting type of surface which works well for drawing with pastels.

Scale really is the ratio of proportion or dimensions of one object compared to another. So if you are painting or even drawing, the scale would be the ratio of the composition to your original from which it was taken. As an example, the picture is drawn one third scale, it would be one third of the size of the original.

Triptych - Three paintings which have a connection. The largest one in the centre with a painting either side of this. Sometimes they are mounted on a type of platform, but they can also be hinged together or simply just be hung side by side. However, in some instances they are done with carvings.

Diptych - A set of two pictures which often can be united in the centre, or if you prefer it, they can be hung with a gap between them. Polytych, on the same theme, only with four or five works of art.

Automatic Drawing can be achieved with a pencil or brush. This is an interesting conception as this type of drawing really is drawing without thought. It is often called Automation and was favoured by surrealists as it afforded them more freedom in their work as non conformists.

Using this method spontaneously, as it were, strange pictures emerged which also tended to be what I would call Abstact Expressionist.

Graphite - I would say is like a grey black form of carbon. At one time it was used for writing in small lumps attached to a stick. Years ago it was named Black Lead, so even now some pencils are not named properly and are sold as lead pencils. The pencils really are a mixture of clay and graphite.

Conte Crayons go back to around the 18th Century. These crayons are made up of graphite and clay which has variances, which, in turn, can be used to create different degrees of hardness.

The content is similar to chalk, has a slightly greasy feel to it and does not crumle much. These crayons are used for drawing and can be obtained in black, red and brown. Conte was a portrait painter when he was young and he invented the modern graphite pencils we now use.

Things I Like About My Aunt's Bamboo Compost Pail

By Juddson Clay

She just bought a bamboo compost pail two weeks or so ago and I have to say, I am jealous. I always thought having a compost bucket in your kitchen was a sure recipe for fruit flies, mold and bad smells, but I had to take it all back when I viewed this thing in action.

She can put all the kitchen scraps generated by her family of five in there and she only has to take it out once per week or so. It looks absolutely beautiful, and best of all, it has redundant filters so there is absolutely no smell!

Not only does the bamboo look great in her kitchen but the bamboo plant is a fast growing, easy to feed, non-resource intensive renewable resource. Unlike many trees that take several decades to mature, bamboo for wood can be grown in just a couple seasons, making it one of the most green materials in existence.

The compost pail is also very resilient, making it a far superior material over, say, ceramic, when it comes to things falling off the counter (hey, it happens) and unlike some of the stainless steel ones out there, it doesn't show off every single mark and fingerprint.

One of my favorite things about this compost holder is that the plastic inner liner comes out and can be run through the dishwasher. This means that between the very effective filters and the regular internal cleanings this compost pail receives, it's probably more sanitary than her kids most of the time!

The outside can also be washed in case something should get on it, though that must be done by hand. That's okay though, because it scrubs off easily. The lid is also very tight fitting, meaning kind's hands won't be able to get in where they shouldn't, and the handles are comfortable and easy to use.

This compost pail looks good, smells great, works great . . . what's not to like? I know I want one.

This compost pail is a great addition to any kitchen if you have a compost pile, and if you don't, why not? They're a great way to reduce the amount of kitchen and lawn scraps that go into your local landfill. And with this bamboo pail, it doesn't even have to lead to a smelly kitchen!

Welcome To CitiField

By Denise I Smithson

After a deal was constructed for the new Shea Stadium to receive $20 million a year from Citi Group for naming rights, the stadium was named Citi Field. Not a bad day at the office considering the team is looking at $400 million in the next 20 years. Then of course, you have the Sterling area that will be named after Delta Airlines as well as a substantially large area behind home plate. However, this is just the beginning to many benefits the stadium has for its fans.

While there are a number of benefits which will be available to fans at the new stadium, increased seating will not be one of these amenities. Citi Field will have a seating capacity of 45,000, down from Shea's 57,000. The improvements which Citi Field features include seven additional elevators, 80 more restroom facilities, 2 more restaurants, 700 additional wheelchair accessible seats and 9 extra luxury suites.

Citi Field will feature some other benefits which are not readily apparent until you visit the park; the seats will be larger for added comfort. One of the best things about Citi Field is that the Mets have committed to stay in Queens until 2049; welcome news to New York baseball fans. It may be a little surprising, but Citi Field nearly didn't happen so quickly - the city's lost bid to host the 2012 Olympics paved the way for the New York Mets to build a new stadium. The stadium may not have been built so quickly had this not been the case.

While it was only a matter of time until Mr. Met had a new place to hang his hat, the timing worked out rather well for the Mets organization as well as for fans. Have a look at these images of the new stadium under construction and the projection of what the finished stadium will look like.

Before long, you'll be able to see Citi Field in person and enjoy all of its amenities. While Shea Stadium will be missed, the memories will live on - and of course, Citi Field will mark a new era for the New York Mets; will you come and be a part of it?

Why Down Sleeping Bags Are The Only Way To Go

By Mike Reston

The technology behind sleeping bags today has sure improved upon the old cowboy bedroll idea. These you can stay warm in the coldest of circumstances using some high tech designs and materials. Here are some ideas to help you buy the right sleeping bag:

You will have those times where it gets cold at night when you are camping. That is why when you are looking to buy a sleeping bag you must think about the coldest temp you will encounter not the warmest. In the summer or warm climates you only need to look for a +35 degree rated sleeping bag to take along.

But if you do your camping in either the mountains during the summer months, or the fall or spring, you probably will need to get a sleeping bag that is rated in the range of +10 - +35. Of course you hearty winter campers should buy bags that are rated between -10 to +10 degree range, and then the alpine mountain climbers and cold weather explorers should get the bags with a rating of below -10.

These ratings are only approximate figures for warmth on these bags from the manufacturers. All people get at different levels of warmth when they sleep, no one is the same. Say you are one that likes a heavy blanket to sleep with, you may need a sleeping bag about 10 degrees higher than norm in rating. But what if you are constantly throwing the blankets off, you then may need a bag that is about 10 degrees lower in norm in rating.

The insulating material, used in a sleeping bag, is the most vital part of it. With today's bags you have 2 materials to choose from: synthetic or goose down. Both of the materials do have their good points and bad points, while down bags are thought to be the best due to their ratio of warmth-to-bulk or the warmth-to-weight being so great.

Down is great for insulating, but it is also light and compresses easily. Now you know how the geese stay warm, and can fly even in the winter! Down is also known for being extremely durable and keeps on insulating for years and years.

But don't sell the synthetic bags short though, the ones being sold today are very high quality and are still being improved upon. This type of bag is a bit heavier to carry weight wise, but has higher performance when wet than down does. Yes the one big con or negative point about down is that when it is wet it is no longer able to insulate you.

Definitely buy a synthetic for camping in damp conditions, you won't be sorry. Also the synthetic is totally hypoallergenic, whereas many people can be allergic to the down. If you have little money to spend the synthetic is cheaper than the down is. Let your adventure begin!

Kidd

By Denise I Smithson

Generally considered one of the best players in the NBA, Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd is known by teammates, opponents and fans as a formidable player. He led the New Jersey Nets to two consecutive NBA finals in 2003 and 2003 before joining up with the Mavericks.

His career in the NBA actually began with the Mavericks; he went on to play for Phoenix for a time, until being traded to the Nets before finally coming back home to the Mavericks in 2008, when he scored the 100th triple-double in his career in the final regular game of the season.

The eldest of six children growing up in San Francisco, Kidd spent a lot of his youth playing on the public courts of nearby Oakland, often playing with NBA All-Star Gary Payton. To this day the two speak fondly of their time coming up on the public courts of the Bay area.

While in high school, Kidd was ranked the top high school player in the country, earning the Naismith Award. He stayed close to his native San Francisco, attending college at UC-Berkeley. He was a finalist for the Wooden Award as well as another Naismith while in college and in 1994, entered the NBA draft. When he left his college team, his #5 jersey was retired.

In the NBA, he was a 9-time NBA All-Star and on the All-NBA First team in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. He was on the 1995 NBA All-Rookie First Team, 2003 NBA Skills Challenge Champion and made All Defensive First and Second teams since 1999 to 2007.

Kidd joined forces with some of the other greats of the game on the US Men's Basketball team in the 2008 Summer Olympics, where they won a gold medal and went undefeated. Kidd has an unbeaten record of 56-0 in USA Basketball (including exhibition games). He has won gold medals in both the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games.

While Jason's NBA career was on the right track, his personal life was not. In January of 2001, he was arrested and pleaded guilty to domestic abuse on his wife. He was ordered to attend anger management and counseling. He gave up alcohol, and it was reported that they had reconciled.

Six years later, in 2007, he filed for divorce claiming intense jealousy, paranoia and threats of false abuse charges from his wife. A month later, his wife counter-filed claiming he broke her rib and damaged her hearing by smashing her head into the console of the car. They had three children.

In 2008, it was found that Jason Kidd and his girlfriend, the model Hope Dworaczyk were expecting a child of their own.

His personal life entirely aside, Kidd is one of the greatest players ever to walk the court. He is one of only two NBA players to score a career total of 14,000 points, 6,600 rebounds and 9,000 assists. Along with Magic Johnson and Wilt Chamberlain, he is one of only three players in the history of the NBA to average triple-doubles for multiple games in playoff series. He is also an all time double triple leader, right behind Magic Johnson's 138 and Oscar Robertson's 181, as well as having been named the USA Basketball 2007 Male Athlete of the Year.

Jason Kidd has set milestones during his career with the NBA and the USA Olympic teams. He is an active community service promoter in the Dallas area, sponsoring programs for youth in the community.
