Technical Artists Terms - 3rd. Edition!

By Anna Meenaghan

Sanguine is the main colour in Conte crayons. It too is the name of a drawing, if this is used as a medium. This medium can either be chalk or crayon, with the pigment containing oxide and actually made of chalk or clay. It is often called red chalk. Sanguine can be a reddish brown, flesh colour or a blood red in colour.

Sandy Paste is an acrylic paste which has a gritty texture and is the colour of sand. You can spread it and make an interesting type of surface which works well for drawing with pastels.

Scale really is the ratio of proportion or dimensions of one object compared to another. So if you are painting or even drawing, the scale would be the ratio of the composition to your original from which it was taken. As an example, the picture is drawn one third scale, it would be one third of the size of the original.

Triptych - Three paintings which have a connection. The largest one in the centre with a painting either side of this. Sometimes they are mounted on a type of platform, but they can also be hinged together or simply just be hung side by side. However, in some instances they are done with carvings.

Diptych - A set of two pictures which often can be united in the centre, or if you prefer it, they can be hung with a gap between them. Polytych, on the same theme, only with four or five works of art.

Automatic Drawing can be achieved with a pencil or brush. This is an interesting conception as this type of drawing really is drawing without thought. It is often called Automation and was favoured by surrealists as it afforded them more freedom in their work as non conformists.

Using this method spontaneously, as it were, strange pictures emerged which also tended to be what I would call Abstact Expressionist.

Graphite - I would say is like a grey black form of carbon. At one time it was used for writing in small lumps attached to a stick. Years ago it was named Black Lead, so even now some pencils are not named properly and are sold as lead pencils. The pencils really are a mixture of clay and graphite.

Conte Crayons go back to around the 18th Century. These crayons are made up of graphite and clay which has variances, which, in turn, can be used to create different degrees of hardness.

The content is similar to chalk, has a slightly greasy feel to it and does not crumle much. These crayons are used for drawing and can be obtained in black, red and brown. Conte was a portrait painter when he was young and he invented the modern graphite pencils we now use.

Things I Like About My Aunt's Bamboo Compost Pail

By Juddson Clay

She just bought a bamboo compost pail two weeks or so ago and I have to say, I am jealous. I always thought having a compost bucket in your kitchen was a sure recipe for fruit flies, mold and bad smells, but I had to take it all back when I viewed this thing in action.

She can put all the kitchen scraps generated by her family of five in there and she only has to take it out once per week or so. It looks absolutely beautiful, and best of all, it has redundant filters so there is absolutely no smell!

Not only does the bamboo look great in her kitchen but the bamboo plant is a fast growing, easy to feed, non-resource intensive renewable resource. Unlike many trees that take several decades to mature, bamboo for wood can be grown in just a couple seasons, making it one of the most green materials in existence.

The compost pail is also very resilient, making it a far superior material over, say, ceramic, when it comes to things falling off the counter (hey, it happens) and unlike some of the stainless steel ones out there, it doesn't show off every single mark and fingerprint.

One of my favorite things about this compost holder is that the plastic inner liner comes out and can be run through the dishwasher. This means that between the very effective filters and the regular internal cleanings this compost pail receives, it's probably more sanitary than her kids most of the time!

The outside can also be washed in case something should get on it, though that must be done by hand. That's okay though, because it scrubs off easily. The lid is also very tight fitting, meaning kind's hands won't be able to get in where they shouldn't, and the handles are comfortable and easy to use.

This compost pail looks good, smells great, works great . . . what's not to like? I know I want one.

This compost pail is a great addition to any kitchen if you have a compost pile, and if you don't, why not? They're a great way to reduce the amount of kitchen and lawn scraps that go into your local landfill. And with this bamboo pail, it doesn't even have to lead to a smelly kitchen!

Welcome To CitiField

By Denise I Smithson

After a deal was constructed for the new Shea Stadium to receive $20 million a year from Citi Group for naming rights, the stadium was named Citi Field. Not a bad day at the office considering the team is looking at $400 million in the next 20 years. Then of course, you have the Sterling area that will be named after Delta Airlines as well as a substantially large area behind home plate. However, this is just the beginning to many benefits the stadium has for its fans.

While there are a number of benefits which will be available to fans at the new stadium, increased seating will not be one of these amenities. Citi Field will have a seating capacity of 45,000, down from Shea's 57,000. The improvements which Citi Field features include seven additional elevators, 80 more restroom facilities, 2 more restaurants, 700 additional wheelchair accessible seats and 9 extra luxury suites.

Citi Field will feature some other benefits which are not readily apparent until you visit the park; the seats will be larger for added comfort. One of the best things about Citi Field is that the Mets have committed to stay in Queens until 2049; welcome news to New York baseball fans. It may be a little surprising, but Citi Field nearly didn't happen so quickly - the city's lost bid to host the 2012 Olympics paved the way for the New York Mets to build a new stadium. The stadium may not have been built so quickly had this not been the case.

While it was only a matter of time until Mr. Met had a new place to hang his hat, the timing worked out rather well for the Mets organization as well as for fans. Have a look at these images of the new stadium under construction and the projection of what the finished stadium will look like.

Before long, you'll be able to see Citi Field in person and enjoy all of its amenities. While Shea Stadium will be missed, the memories will live on - and of course, Citi Field will mark a new era for the New York Mets; will you come and be a part of it?

Why Down Sleeping Bags Are The Only Way To Go

By Mike Reston

The technology behind sleeping bags today has sure improved upon the old cowboy bedroll idea. These you can stay warm in the coldest of circumstances using some high tech designs and materials. Here are some ideas to help you buy the right sleeping bag:

You will have those times where it gets cold at night when you are camping. That is why when you are looking to buy a sleeping bag you must think about the coldest temp you will encounter not the warmest. In the summer or warm climates you only need to look for a +35 degree rated sleeping bag to take along.

But if you do your camping in either the mountains during the summer months, or the fall or spring, you probably will need to get a sleeping bag that is rated in the range of +10 - +35. Of course you hearty winter campers should buy bags that are rated between -10 to +10 degree range, and then the alpine mountain climbers and cold weather explorers should get the bags with a rating of below -10.

These ratings are only approximate figures for warmth on these bags from the manufacturers. All people get at different levels of warmth when they sleep, no one is the same. Say you are one that likes a heavy blanket to sleep with, you may need a sleeping bag about 10 degrees higher than norm in rating. But what if you are constantly throwing the blankets off, you then may need a bag that is about 10 degrees lower in norm in rating.

The insulating material, used in a sleeping bag, is the most vital part of it. With today's bags you have 2 materials to choose from: synthetic or goose down. Both of the materials do have their good points and bad points, while down bags are thought to be the best due to their ratio of warmth-to-bulk or the warmth-to-weight being so great.

Down is great for insulating, but it is also light and compresses easily. Now you know how the geese stay warm, and can fly even in the winter! Down is also known for being extremely durable and keeps on insulating for years and years.

But don't sell the synthetic bags short though, the ones being sold today are very high quality and are still being improved upon. This type of bag is a bit heavier to carry weight wise, but has higher performance when wet than down does. Yes the one big con or negative point about down is that when it is wet it is no longer able to insulate you.

Definitely buy a synthetic for camping in damp conditions, you won't be sorry. Also the synthetic is totally hypoallergenic, whereas many people can be allergic to the down. If you have little money to spend the synthetic is cheaper than the down is. Let your adventure begin!

Kidd

By Denise I Smithson

Generally considered one of the best players in the NBA, Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd is known by teammates, opponents and fans as a formidable player. He led the New Jersey Nets to two consecutive NBA finals in 2003 and 2003 before joining up with the Mavericks.

His career in the NBA actually began with the Mavericks; he went on to play for Phoenix for a time, until being traded to the Nets before finally coming back home to the Mavericks in 2008, when he scored the 100th triple-double in his career in the final regular game of the season.

The eldest of six children growing up in San Francisco, Kidd spent a lot of his youth playing on the public courts of nearby Oakland, often playing with NBA All-Star Gary Payton. To this day the two speak fondly of their time coming up on the public courts of the Bay area.

While in high school, Kidd was ranked the top high school player in the country, earning the Naismith Award. He stayed close to his native San Francisco, attending college at UC-Berkeley. He was a finalist for the Wooden Award as well as another Naismith while in college and in 1994, entered the NBA draft. When he left his college team, his #5 jersey was retired.

In the NBA, he was a 9-time NBA All-Star and on the All-NBA First team in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. He was on the 1995 NBA All-Rookie First Team, 2003 NBA Skills Challenge Champion and made All Defensive First and Second teams since 1999 to 2007.

Kidd joined forces with some of the other greats of the game on the US Men's Basketball team in the 2008 Summer Olympics, where they won a gold medal and went undefeated. Kidd has an unbeaten record of 56-0 in USA Basketball (including exhibition games). He has won gold medals in both the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games.

While Jason's NBA career was on the right track, his personal life was not. In January of 2001, he was arrested and pleaded guilty to domestic abuse on his wife. He was ordered to attend anger management and counseling. He gave up alcohol, and it was reported that they had reconciled.

Six years later, in 2007, he filed for divorce claiming intense jealousy, paranoia and threats of false abuse charges from his wife. A month later, his wife counter-filed claiming he broke her rib and damaged her hearing by smashing her head into the console of the car. They had three children.

In 2008, it was found that Jason Kidd and his girlfriend, the model Hope Dworaczyk were expecting a child of their own.

His personal life entirely aside, Kidd is one of the greatest players ever to walk the court. He is one of only two NBA players to score a career total of 14,000 points, 6,600 rebounds and 9,000 assists. Along with Magic Johnson and Wilt Chamberlain, he is one of only three players in the history of the NBA to average triple-doubles for multiple games in playoff series. He is also an all time double triple leader, right behind Magic Johnson's 138 and Oscar Robertson's 181, as well as having been named the USA Basketball 2007 Male Athlete of the Year.

Jason Kidd has set milestones during his career with the NBA and the USA Olympic teams. He is an active community service promoter in the Dallas area, sponsoring programs for youth in the community.

Physiology Behind Jump Training

By Cade

Jumping exercises are now widely known by the term plyometrics. The actual words plyo and metrics stand for measurable increases.

The secret behind plyometrics is that it works with both the speed and power of a muscle to increase power. Plyometrics are exercises that focus on developing the most strength possible in the shortest amount of time.

When you brain tells your muscle to fire it does so by sending nerve impulses to the muscle fibers which causes a chemical reaction. When you bend down prior to jumping, your muscles react without any conscious thought on your part.

The greatest jumpers actually don't spend much time on the ground. They realize that the longer they are on the ground the more energy is lost and that same energy could be used to jump higher.

So to teach people how to jump higher you must focus on being in contact with the ground for a shorter period of time. This is why plyometrics exists, to teach muscles a faster reaction time.

Bending down before take off is often referred to as the loading phase. This loading phase is crucial to jumping higher because it gives the muscle more power.

Muscles can be compared to rubber bands to an extent. A stretched rubber band will go farther than a non-stretched rubber band.

Think about when you knee tendon is tapped and your leg kicks. The tendon was stretched which caused your muscles to react with a lot of power just as they do in the load phase of a jump.

The fastest reaction of a muscle occurs when it is stretched first. Although the speed of said reaction doesn't really improve with training, you can improve the strength with which the contraction occurs which in turn increase jump height.

Tips for Buying a Bicycle

By PJ Walker

Deciding to get a bike is the easy part. Figuring out which bike to get can get complicated. But it doesn't have to be stressful. If you remember to these tips, researching the right bike for you will be fun and easy. Remember these guidelines and you'll end up getting a great bike for you.

1.Know what you will use your bike for. Are you going to be out cruising with the kids? Riding for fitness? Commuting or maybe flying downhill? Depending on how you intend to use your bike, you will need a different bike for needs. Know your needs first, before you start looking.

2.Start Slow. If you're just getting started don't go out and spend $2000 on a mountain bike. Get a reasonably priced bike ($200-$400) that is going to last and perform well. As you get more and more into biking you can add and upgrade components or trade up the entire bike.

3.Got skills? The sheer desire to get out there and ride can be a powerful urge. However, it is best not to let the desire take over and put you in a position of buying too much bike. If you can ride a bike, but are not used to all the gears, shifting options and gizmos that come with a performance bike, you may be discouraged and lose your enthusiasm. Being a casual cyclist is not a bad thing. You don't have to be Lance Armstrong to enjoy a good ride. Take a genuine assessment of your skill level before making your decision.

4.Do Your Research. You don't need to do a Wikipedia entry on the evolution of derailleurs but you need to know how much bike is good for you. There are a lot of options available but the internet is a great tool here. There are tons of cycling blogs and forums where riders will be more than willing to help you out.

5.Play 20 questions. I have found that many people are scared to look stupid or are too shy to ask a lot of questions in a face to face setting. They tend to feel intimidated and end up buying something they don't want or need. With the internet so readily available, it offers those people the opportunity to ask many questions anonymously. Find a blog or internet bike shop and send an email. Not only will you get answers to your questions, you can use the email as a reference while researching products.

6.Know your size and fit. There are multiple factors that affect the decision behind the right bicycle. Height, weight, fitness level, gender and even age all contribute to the customization of a good bike. Safety should be the number one concern on any bike owners mind. Not just road safety or judging conditions, you do not want to put any unnecessary strain on your back, neck, legs or arms.

7.Don't take my word for it. Though your interest in cycling may be new to you, there are many addicts out there. Beginners, cruiser, mountain bikers and "live to bike" types; your research should not be limited to retail experts. Ask those folks who are into it or getting into it, just like you. Their input is independent and free!

8.Go B&M. Head over to your local Brick and Mortar Bike Shop. With all the latest gadgets and different components available its nice to be able to compare them side by side. It's always good to develop relationships with guys in a bike shop. Their expertise will certainly come in handy. Even if you order your bike online you will eventually nned to tune it up or change out parts. Knowing guys in your local shop will always be a help.

9.Ask to borrow a bike from friends and family. If the thought of visiting a bike shop is still inconvenient or intimidating, speak to people in your world and go for a ride. You'd be amazed what a ride will do for you when trying to make a decision. In addition, he or she can offer their personal experiences with the bike.

10.Above all, go with your gut. Research, advice from friends and the blogosphere are all terrific tools to help you. However, nothing can compete with trusting your instincts. Nothing is more frustrating than making a purchase that goes against your gut and regretting your decision. Find your bike and go for a ride.

Finding the right bike doesn't have to be stressful. If you remember to have fun and don't get caught up in the technical details you will end up with a fantastic bike. If you're just starting out find a moderately priced bike that will last and perform well. Before you know it your daily bike ride will become an addiction. Fun is the name of the game. If you are not going to have fun with your bike, what is the point? Be well versed in your wants and needs.

What Are Fruit Machine Emulators and Why You Should Use Them

By Allen Flores

How many times particularity on-line have you played the fruit machines, and told your pals it is just like the real thing. If you are playing on a on line gaming club then you will in reality be winning real cash. The machines you play on look the same to the ones you play at the casino. All the bells and whistles are there. You could in reality hear simulated money dropping. These are named as fruit machine simulators. Although they're usually known as virtual slot-machines as well.

What is become new in the last while is that these fruit-machines that youre playing are no longer like the real thing, they in reality are the real thing. These are now addressed as fruit machine emulators. Reason being is because they're encrypted precisely the identical way that the machines youve played at the pubs and casinos are. So now when youre playing these machines they are programmed with the identical game code. There is only one difference and that's you're not physically at the pub or casino playing. You may very well be in the comfort of your individual home.

So really what is so great about this? Well you could now get free practice. What in the world does that signify? This's really an important prospect for the serious fruit machine player. Several people take the game more seriously then the ones that simply enjoy them for abit of entertainment.

Last time the serious players have spent tons of money on these machines, merely trying to figure out how they work, winning is not the goal. It is no good practicing or trying to learn on a virtual machine because although they looked the same, they simply were not the same. That has now changed with the birth of the fruit-machine emulator.

You can spend hours playing this free of charge. There're some free web sites that now provide fruit-machine emulators to play.

It would be entertaining to see whether if these free emulators are creating whatsoever concern for the makers who produce them for the paid gaming industry. I wonder if theyre interested that all their software secrets will become exposed. If that were to happen and then there wouldnt be much point in gaming owners to promote them. These are issues that remain to be seen.

To find these fruit emulators on the internet, you just simply need to do a lookup for them. There're some sites that will let you play them for free. Then there is fruit emulator Cds that you could buy, that've some varieties of the fruit-machine emulators. This way you learn about the several ones and at the same time don't get tired. Even though that never seems to be an issue with the serious fruit-machine players.

Either way theres zero doubt with this fruit-machine emulators now hitting the market, it has changed the whole concept of playing the fruit machines whether at the Pub or online.

Wall Plants

By John Hicks

Glorious in flower, on occasions regally temperamental, this richly endowed genus must surely lay strong claim to contain the most beautiful climbers ever to grace our gardens. As I stand each spring under a 30-ft. high hawthorn through which has intertwined a Clematis montana Elizabeth I would be the last to disagree. The white of the hawthorn and pink of the clematis intermingle to make the complete floral curtain.

I always use a soft string which will not chafe even the most tender bark and, which is perhaps more important, it will rot after a year or two. When indestructible material is used I grow careless about the annual inspection to ensure the stem is not being constricted by the tie. All wall plants must be looked over at least twice a year to make certain the stems are not being chafed or strangled by the supporting media.

Before attempting any planting examine the soil at the foot of an average house wall. Usually it consists of builders' leavings, sub-soil, pot crocks and other aridities, possibly enriched by a few tea leaves. All this must be excavated and replaced with soil from a fertile part of the garden.

A good mixture consists of 5 parts of garden soil to 2 parts of peat plus a 6-in. pot of bonemeal to every barrowload of the mixture. Only a narrow border need be made, 2 ft. wide by 15 in. deep, for given a good start healthy roots will penetrate less profitable fields.

Climbers need not be confined to walls. Stumps of old trees, venerable apple or other fruit trees, chain-link fencing, indeed anything capable of supporting the extra weight. For climbers some support will be necessary and modern invention provides a richly varied choice. A well-made wooden trellis, plastic-covered mesh, vine eyes with wire stretched between, or a nail hammered in where required - there is something to suit every depth of pocket.

Some gardeners have an instinct for putting flowers in just the right association with one another and I am fortunate in that for 15 years just such an artist gave me endless help at Harlow Car. C. macropetala, an early-summer-flowering species with large violet semi-double blooms, was her favourite and it was always grown through a wisteria which flowered at the same time. C. montana is the robust, independent, 'go out and conquer the world' member of the clan, growing well in any position. I have seen it on walls, potting sheds, thatched cottages, Scots Pine, apple trees, even a ruined church. I grow the white form granditiora , the rose-purpleflowered, bronze-leaved rubens and the pearl- pink, sweetly fragrant Elizabeth. All flower in May and some years a small second crop appears rather apologetically in August.

Soccer Pele

By Denise I Smithson

Pele, a former Brazilian footballer, is thought by many to be the greatest footballer in history. Pele is his nickname; he was born in Brazil with the given name of Edison (Edson) Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940. While his birth certificate reads that his first name is Edison, his preference is Edson, but Pele is the name that this sports legend is known by.

When people think of soccer, they think of Pele. He seemed to be born to play soccer. He possessed amazing skills and seemed to make the ball do exactly what he wanted. He had astonishing speed as well as ball control. He was agile, lithe, and strong. He is well known for his unique dribbling and passing techniques. The crowd absolutely loved to watch him play; he always seemed to pull of some amazing feat every time he was in possession of the ball. His skill allowed him to score 1,283 first-class goals, 12 of which were made during World Cup tournaments, in 1958, 1968 and 1970. Pele was the only football player in the games history to claim three World Cup trophies.

It was Waldemar de Brito who discovered this incredible talent. de Brito started coaching Pele in 1954 and in only two years, Pele played his first professional match at the age of 16. A year later, Pele was in a starting position on Santos. He won his first World Cup at seventeen and by 1962, Pele was receiving regular offers of positions on European football teams. However, a move overseas was not in the cards for Pele - the Brazilian government declared him a national treasure, which barred his joining a foreign football club.

Pele continued playing for Santos until the end of his 17th season in 1972. He retired from football but would occasionally suit up during competitive matches. At the start of the 1975 season, he came out of this semi-retirement to play for the New York Cosmos who were part of the North American soccer League. Although many considered him to be past his prime, Pele was responsible for greatly increasing the interest and public awareness of soccer in the United States. In his third and last season with the Cosmos, he led the team to win the 1977 NASL championship.

Pele is still considered to be a national hero in his native Brazil, where his contributions to football are universally acknowledged - something also noticed by FIFA, who have named Pele the official football ambassador to the world. Pele advocates for the underprivileged as well as for the sport which made him a star. It is not for nothing that Pele is known to this day as "The King of Football" and he is a American National Soccer Hall of Fame member.

Antique and Vintage Slot Machines - Used Fruit Machines

By Allen Flores

Where would the world be without inventions. Most of what we've originally came from someones ideas and dreams. The slot machines are no different. It is unlikely that the inventor of this innovative, special and some times addictive device ever thought just how popular it would get.

The original slot machines were not made with offering whatever type of enumeration. They are actually designed to only display poker hands. They were invented in 1891 and consisted of not more than 5 drums. When these were purchased and utilised in places of business, the owners wanted to become innovative too. To encourage the use of these gadgets they would offer their individual prizes. Nothing elaborate mind you like the hefty jack-pots that they now pay out. The winner ordinarily will get a free drink or two for his efforts. The slot machines had caught on and there's no stopping them from this point on.

The genuine original true slot machine as we know it today in similarity was the Liberty bell version that's invented in the basement of Charles Fey. Although entertaining and intriguing they truly didnt become excessively famous until they showed up on the famous Las Vegas Strip at the Flamingo Hotel. The Liberty Bell did however give a payout of 50 cents which's pretty darn good back in those days.

The slot machines grew in interest and design over the years. One unique machine had pictures of various types of chewing gum images on it's reels. This's where the cherry and melon symbols were born from. A couple years ago the Bell Fruit Gum Company had a bar logo. So you could guess how the slot machine ended up with this symbol which's still well known until now.

It is just a matter of time before the slot machine became electric and the very first one was addressed as Money Honey. This wasnt all that long ago and actually took place in 1964 slot machines and the later to come fruit-machines were simply abounding with some other symbols to sum up to the intrigue and interest of the game. Its this Money Honey machine that made the 1st pay-outs of up to 500 coins automatically without having to count on an attendant to deal with the transaction.

Finally along came the really first video slot in 1996. This slot allowed for a 2nd screen bonus round. It's addressed as Reel Em In.

In nowadays casinos you would find a really huge range of selection of slot machines. From single barrels up to 20+ barrels. Even though much more complicated in design then when they're originally made it doesn't take away from the excitement that is experienced after all those years ago.

It's impressive how some thing that's just constructed in the basement of an individual's garage could be such a prosperous business today. Could you imagine what the casinos would be like without these machines? I'm sure there'll be fewer people at the casinos.
